About Jane
A teacher who loves the game as much as the people who play it
Jane has her degree in Mathematics Education and taught students and teachers mathematics with a focus on understanding and hands-on learning. Once Jane learned Mah Jongg, she realized the strong connection to teaching math and teaching beginners American Mah Jongg. While she emphasizes, you do not need to do any math to play Mah Jongg, beginning Mah Jongg learners should understand it is important to have hands-on learning experiences and lots of opportunities to practice to become confident in playing. As a mathematics educator, Jane saw the connection to how implementing various teaching strategies and creating lessons that actively engage the learners is critical to the success of individuals learning how to play and think through a game of Mah Jongg. Jane has been playing American Mah Jongg and teaching it for years. Her classes are known for being warm, patient, and genuinely fun — because she believes the best way to learn is to enjoy the new experience.
How it started
Jane discovered Mah Jongg at a neighbor's kitchen table and was immediately hooked — not just by the game itself, but by the way it brought people together. Within a year she was playing regularly, and it wasn't long before friends started asking her to teach them.
What began as informal sessions around her own table grew into structured classes as word spread. She developed her teaching approach by paying close attention to where new players got confused, what made the rules click, and how to keep a room full of beginners laughing even when the Charleston felt impossible.
Today Jane teaches small groups and private lessons locally, and she's helped hundreds of players go from complete beginner to confident at the table.
